Why is it called White Settlement?

The name dates to the 1840s, when European-American settlers established a homestead community west of what is now Fort Worth. Local Native American tribes — primarily Caddo and Comanche peoples — referred to the cluster of newcomers as 'the white settlement' to distinguish them from neighboring Native settlements along the West Fork of the Trinity River. The name stuck through incorporation in 1941. In 2005, voters rejected a proposal to rename the city to 'West Settlement.' Sources: City of White Settlement (wstx.org); Texas State Historical Association (tshaonline.org); Fort Worth Star-Telegram archive on the 2005 vote.
