The Story of Mansfield
Mansfield is a town built on flour. Around 1856 two partners, Ralph Sandiford Man and Julian Feild, bought land along Walnut Creek and built a three-story brick grist mill — the first steam-powered mill in North Texas — finishing it before 1860.
The mill was a regional marvel, drawing customers from as far south as San Antonio and as far north as Oklahoma. Feild opened a general store and an inn nearby, and by 1860 a town had formed with Feild as its first postmaster.
The community took the name 'Mansfeild,' a blend of its two founders. Years of misspelling eventually settled it into the familiar 'Mansfield.'
From that pioneer mill town, Mansfield grew into a thriving suburb on the southern edge of Tarrant County, spilling into Johnson and Ellis counties as it expanded.

History
Founded 1856, incorporated 1890
The first European settlers — mostly of Scotch-Irish origin — arrived in the rolling Cross Timbers country around 1840. When Ralph Sandiford Man and Julian Feild arrived around 1856 and built a grist mill at the crossroads that became the center of town, the community took on the name 'Mansfeild' — a combination of the two founders' names — eventually re-spelled 'Mansfield.' The town incorporated in 1890 and remained a hub for surrounding farmland for much of the 20th century.
